Bookstacks Weekend Events: Aug 1-2

A little fiction, a little poetry – what a perfect weekend at Bookstacks.

Saturday

Noon – Book Trivia: Crime Fiction
Crime doesn’t pay, or so the saying goes.  Crime Fiction authors such as Agatha Christie, Patricia Cornwell and P D James wouldn’t agree, and neither will you if you get enough trivia questions correct on Saturday to win the 500L first prize.  It would be a crime if you didn’t try for the best themed costume as well, so limber up those google fingers and steal the prize Lindens from Simeon.
Location: Bookstack Pub

2:00 p.m. – Science Fiction Saturday
Jago Constantine hosts a weekly gathering of science fiction fans. The discussions focuses primarily on books, but no one objects if it veers off into movies, television, etc. Come prepared to add some title to your TBR list.
Location: Bookstack Pub

Sunday

11:00 am. – Poetry & Pints
Poetry open mics abound in Second Life, providing poets with many opportunities to share their work. Poetry and Pints takes a slightly different focus. We ask folks to come to share works by their favorite poets. It is a great opportunity to discover some new writers as well as revisit your favorites.
Location: Bookstacks Pub

3:00 p.m. – Poetry Libre Open Mic
Serene Bechir and Leonard Zimring host this weekly poetry open mic. Bring a poem to read or simply sit back and enjoy the verse.
Location: Bookstacks Pub

Bookstacks Events – July 25-26

Bookstacks is hosting a couple of new events this weekend, and we have an Off the Shelf taping with Kat Klaybourne (Kat Alderson from Third Life) and Widget Whiteberry (Virtually Speaking).

Saturday

Noon – Book Trivia: Women on Top
Simeon came up with this week’s theme – it is obvious by the title: Women on Top.  Come along to Saturday’s quiz and see just what questions have been put together to make Simeon’s fantasy into a Book Trivia Quiz.  Use your google skills and if you come out on top, 500L is yours.  If you win the contest for best themed avatar, you can win 500L for that as well.
Location: Bookstacks Pub (slurl)

2:00 – Science Fiction Saturdays
Discuss science fiction in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Got something to say about the book you’re reading? Share your insights with us! You’re welcome to come and just listen too! We’ll happily discuss sci fi books, television and movies … but mostly books! If you think you might come along, bring some thoughts on the last science fiction you read, what you’re reading now, and what you want to read next!
Location: Bookstacks Pub (slurl)

The Purity Myth Discussion – Saturday at 4

On Saturday afternoon, Bookstacks will be co-hosting a discussion of Jessica Valenti’s new book, The Purity Myth. I’m finishing up the book myself at the moment, and I’m looking forward to the discussion.

Valenti is asking readers to look at how our society views the importance we place on virginity, especially female virginity. She discusses the pressures it is putting on young people, and she examines the larger social implications.

Valenti’s distinctive writing style, a topic that on the surface seems straight forward, and spotlight turned onto American values – this book should lead to an interesting discussion.
